Camp Reset

Camp Reset is a 4-day digital detox camp in southeastern Ontario for 300 people.

It is a unique invitation to reconnect with the land, others and yourself through optional activities centred around rest and play.

We hope it’s as wholesome, whimsical and [re]wilding as we intend.

This page provides information from our 2024 Camp - stay tuned for 2025 Camp updates!

Camp Reset is attempting to remedy our experiences with disconnection with ourselves, with others and with the environment by providing access to connection, community and collective effervescence.

A lot of people came with no idea what they were coming to. It’s a literal kids’ camp. That’s the vibe. When you drive in, you see hammocks, a sauna in the middle of nowhere, a huge basketball court, and so much open space to just play. There’s a mess hall, a space where people go to meditate and hang out, an arts and crafts area, and a deck overlooking the lake.

There are all these things you can do. But you can also come and do nothing. You can read for three days, and no one would judge you. I’m an extrovert, but what I found really dope was how comfortable it was for the introverts I talked to.

The Invitations of a Camp Reset

  • At Camp Reset, we don’t talk about work. The initial idea around this was pretty simple: we wanted to shortcut our way out of people starting conversations by asking “what do you do” but the more we thought about it, the more we felt that it’s so rare to have spaces where we can truly put our work selves on a shelf so that’s what Reset has become. Work Free.

  • Camp Reset was one of the first digital detox experiences in the world when we first launched in 2015. What this means is that everyone at Camp is phone free. Your phone will be locked away and returned to you after closing ceremonies.

Cameras are not permitted at Camp other than the Camp Reset documentation team. You are welcome to use the camera on your phone before you hand in your phone and after you retrieve it, assuming you have consent of those whom you are taking a picture with or of.

  • Upon arrival to camp, you’ll be invited to introduce yourself with a “Camp Name”. This name can be literally anything such as a nickname you already have, an intention you have for camp, an alter ego, etc. The purpose of this parameter is to foster anonymity, introduce playfulness and provide agency to show up however you want. You can change your name as much as you’d like. Some examples of names include: Duck Hunt, Phoenix, Heelios, Monkey, Meta, Red, Black Panther and Doc.

  • Camp is a de-commercialized environment and you do not require money when there. Either you’ve already paid for what you need (ie. accommodations, food, etc.) or whatever you need is available through the generosity and care of others. Furthermore, there are no advertisements or any form of marketing attempting to grab your attention or convert you into a consumer.

Our Program: Choose Your Own Adventure

Since we started, our practice has been to share our final program close to when Camp begins to optimize for surprise and delight. It’s also our way of subverting the cultural norm of needing to know everything that happens before saying yes to to it.

That said, we also recognize that knowing what’s happening can facilitate greater access and inform one’s decision making so here’s what we’ll share now:

At Camp, we invited you to choose your own adventure, meaning that there are always several concurrent options to pick from and you’re encouraged to do whatever feels good for you in the moment. Everything is an invitation and optional. There is no one right way and you have agency on how you adventure.

Inside Stories: The People of Reset

INSIDE STORIES exists to foster connection in a world suffering and dying from disconnectivity. It seeks to examine the stories we tell and don’t tell and how that impacts us. Created by Lara Margaret Marjerrison, INSIDE STORIES: The People of Reset is published bi-weekly between now and Camp Reset 2024. The series will feature 20 personal stories of the People of Reset, exploring our relationship to place and how it shapes who we are and how we function in the world at large and, more specifically, in the context of Reset—pondering the through-line that brings such a wildly diverse group of individuals together in community in this most special place.

Social Health is the aspect of overall well-being that stems from connection and community. It is is an emerging concept that is different from but connected to mental health and social determinants.
While physical health relates to the body and mental health relates to the mind, social health relates to relationships.
— Kasley Killam

Camp Reset is co-created.

  • Campers contribute to co-creating camp primarily via our Trew Program and Care Programs. Learn more about both here.

Some also contribute to our programming - learn more about our invitation framework here.

Finally, there are a handful of opportunities to help set-up and volunteer at Camp, which we invite folks toput their hands for once they’ve purchased their tickets.

  • Camp is led by our Camp Collective, who begin planning camp in January and who commit to their roles for 1 year. They are provided with honarariums of $750 - $2000, provided with private accommodations at Camp, discounted tickets to future Camps, opportunities for learning, care and connection and a 1 year membership for Reset Living Room.

  • Camp is held by our Staff team and led by our Executive Director, Adil Dhalla-Kim. Adil is one of Reset’s 8 Co-Founders and he joined Reset full time in 2020. Learn more abut him here.

  • Camp is stewarded by our 6 person volunteer Board: Sabrina Bowman, Monique Miller, Claudia Escobar, Hima Batavia, Camara Chambers and Anderson Petergeorge.

A note about lineage....

The idea of Camp Reset is not ours and we are proudly building from, on, and with the love, labour, and leadership of many people.

We initially learned about the concept of an adult summer camp in 2014, via Camp Grounded, which is now Digital Detox. In 2015, the first Camp was hosted at the Ecology Retreat Centre for 80 intrepid founding campers. It was organized by our 8 co-founders Adil Dhalla-Kim, Andrew Peek, Antonio Carito, Emma Brooks, Hima Batavia, Negin Sairafi, Rhea Meta, and Vlad Glebov.

Over the years, our co-founders have danced in and out of Reset’s orbit. Some continue to advise, govern, steward and be on the team along with many other folks who have played leadership roles with Camp. In addition to our Camp Reset 2024 Collective, we’d like to acknowledge these individuals for their roles on previous Collective and at previous Camps: Abhinand Menon, Adam Shalaby, Antoni Seloterio, Amanda Black, Ciaran Breen, Colin Edwards Crew, Darius Bashar, Dylan Rudder, Etienne Dupuy, Josh Fernandes, Mathura Mahendren, Mike Carlson, Melissa Brizuela, Muriel Alexander, Sal Talon, Shazia Abji, Shilbee Dhalla-Kim, Steve Ballantyne, Tim Groves and Valery Navarrete.

The work and wisdom of many that we don’t know permeates Camp. A non-exhaustive list of those who wish to give flowers to is adrienne maree brown, bell hooks, Vivek Murthy, Priya Parker, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Jane Jacobs, Ted Lasso, Robert D. Putnam, Johann Hari, Gabor Maté, Valerie Kaur, Arundhati Roy, Mr. Rogers, Tricia Hersey, Brené Brown, Esther Perel and ALOK.

Camp Reset is hosted on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Nation, who have lived in the area for thousands of years and continue to have a presence in the region today.

  • "The camp really is a choose your own adventure weekend, and there is such a mix of activities to pick from, and lots of opportunity to get energized and connect with people, and just as many opportunities to unwind and rest." - Noor

  • "Reset feels like a big, diverse, intergenerational cottage weekend with your closest friends and complete strangers, away from the noise, distractions, and stresses of everyday life. A place where you can lean into being yourself, share meaningful connections with outstanding humans, and bask in the joy of full presence through play. You must go once, and if can, return year after year, to create space for both your inner child and highest self." - Negin Sairafi

  • "I'm a socially anxious and introverted person usually but I was so happy to have attended Reset 2023! You can make so many friends since everyone is so warm and welcoming." - Lauren

  • "You are all amazing. This program is amazing. Everyone I’ve every met over the age of 18 has talked about burnout, and all of you are actually doing and offering something as a way to combat it in a real and wonderful way. Today I’ve been telling everyone how being a kid is wasted on youth, lol. I honestly hadn’t realized how out of touch I was with that “kid” part of me. To just be “taken care of” for those 4 days was so incredibly healing and I am beyond grateful. I’ll 10000000% be back next year and I’m excited to get to volunteer this time around." - Keeley Xavier

Camp Reset is hosted at Camp Walden, an overnight summer camp for kids ages 7-16 with a back to basics approach situated along a private lake in Palmer Rapids, Ontario..
